String Instruments
Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Double Bass.
Junior School Woodstock allows students to begin string instruments in Grade 2. Beginning students may choose between violin, cello, and double bass, subject instrument to availability and the physical size of the student. These students are placed in the Beginning Strings ensemble which rehearses in the morning before school.
Students in Grades 2-6 who have prior learning are placed into the Junior School Junior Strings ensemble, according to a placement audition. This ensemble rehearses in the morning before school. Senior School Students in Grades 7-12 who wish to begin a string instrument are placed into the Beginning Orchestra. Senior School students with prior learning are placed into the Junior Orchestra, Intermediate Orchestra, or Advanced Orchestra, depending on their skill level and their placement audition.
Mr. Ravi Arthur, HOD
Mr. Arthur joined Woodstock School in the Fall semester of 1990 after having taught music in Bangalore for four years. Over the twenty years of teaching at Woodstock he has directed the various orchestras besides teaching string instruments - violin, viola, cello & contrabass. He has also directed the middle and high school choirs besides teaching general music, basic and Advanced Placement music theory. He introduced the classical guitar curriculum into the school's music programme. He is currently directing the advanced and the intermediate orchestras besides teaching strings, classical guitar and music theory. He has taken on the responsibility of heading the music department for the third time in his tenure at Woodstock.
Mr. Amitavo Roy
Amitavo Roy: String Teacher (Violin & Viola), Ensemble Conductor (Beginning Strings & Junior Orchestra). Early training received on violin at the age of six at Oxford Mission, Calcutta under Rev. Theodore Mathie and Mr. Ananta Makhal. In 1994 attended Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan for two years, studying viola and music theory. Received Bachelor of Arts in Music/Music Education (strings) from Mercyhurst College, Erie, Pennsylvania. Total teaching experience, eight years. Previous teaching experience includes: Pailan World School, Calcutta/Music Teacher & private string studio in Fairfax, Va. Other interest includes but not limited to, sports, outdoors, different culture& food, enjoying especially cooking and washing dishes. Wife Swati (literally meaning Life Partner) and baby boy Abhiroop Theodore complete the happy family life here at Woodstock..
