WOSA-NA Reunion

More than 250 alumni and their families descended on the Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina, for the 21st Annual General Business Meeting and Reunion of the Woodstock Old Students Association in North America, from August 4-7, 2006. In addition to many regular reunion attendees, a number of new alumni, including an energetic group from the late '70s and early '80s, participated in the reunion festivities while holding their own satellite reunion in the resort's family lodge.

Many favorite reunion events were held, such as the silent fundraising auction, a formal Hindustani khanna, Sunday morning devotions and choir service, the annual business meeting with WOSA-NA Council elections, and frequent chai and snack breaks. The weekend schedule also included a wealth of fascinating break-out workshops, presented by Woodstock alumni on a variety of topics:

  • Sustainable Development for Marginalized Mountain Peoples: Challenges and Opportunities in the Himalaya, GABRIEL CAMPBELL, '65
  • Belief and Values in Diversity: Religious Life at Woodstock School, BRIAN DUNN, '89
  • Contemporary Fiction from South Asia and the South Asia Diaspora, MARGO WARNER CURL, '67
  • HIV & AIDS in India: Learning from the U.S. Experience, STAN LEHMAN (S)
  • WOSA on the Web (WOW)-New Options for Alumni Communication and Networking, CHRIS STARR, '81
  • Letters from Home, MARGARET LOEHLIN SHAFER, '56
  • Mussoorie Gramin Vikas Samiti (MGVS): A Sustainable Development Project Started and Developed by Woodstockites, RACHEL RAO, '86
  • Tsunami and Earthquake Relief Efforts: Woodstockites' Personal Experiences, moderated by JIM RUGH, '60
  • That Part of Us That Is Forever India, JOSEPH DUERKSEN, '45
  • Voices of Experience: Woodstock Pranks and Adventures, SALLY HAZLETT WOOLEVER, '50

During the annual business meeting, the following were elected to the WOSA/NA Council: DAVID SCOTT, '52; VERDA HOSTETLER BIALAC, '55; LELA FOLKERS, Staff; AJAY RAJ, '82; AMAL CHAUDHURI, '78; GAURAV AURORA, '93; ANNE LIND, Staff; TED CHITAMBAR, '63; and BRAD TAYLOR, '76. A new committee structure for WOSA/NA was also implemented. On the last evening, the Council and all the reunion participants discussed possible future WOSA-NA programs and events.

SHARON SETO '79, Director of Development for six years, was honored for her work at Woodstock over the past ten years and presented with a gift from WOSA/NA. During the Plenary Session, BOB and ELLEN ALTER '43, presented "A Personal Account of Woodstock's Evolution from a School Supported by Mission Boards to an International Christian School," a perspective on the school's transitional decades, accompanied by an amazing collection of photos taken throughout the years. Bob and Ellen were then surprised by a special honor bestowed on them by WOSA-NA. MARTY ALTER CHEN '60 presented a moving poetic tribute to Ellen, written by JOHN ALTER '65, her nephew, and an audiovisual presentation highlighted Bob's service to Woodstock. A beautifully engraved Saharanpur box was presented to the Alters by WOSA North America.
