Harvey

During this semester's Drama Weekend, on the 11th and 12th of November, students staged "Harvey", the 1944 Pulitzer Prize winning play by Mary Chase (1907-1981).

Elwood P. Dowd (Raghav Chandra, grade 10) the central character of the play, is a friendly eccentric whose best friend, Harvey, is an invisible white rabbit. His sister Veta Louise Simmons (Ella Duncan, grade 11) and niece Myrtle Mae Simmons (Nicole Lemire, grade 11) attempt to commit him to a sanitarium. Veta seeks the help of Dr. Chumley (Rahul Mukerjee, grade 12) and Judge Gaffney (Matthew Wilson, grade 9) in attempting to destroy Elwood's vision of the seemingly non-existent white rabbit. Dr. Chumley's assistants, Nurse Kelly (Melanie Jones, grade 11), Dr. Lyman Sanderson (Kabir Sarkar-Ali, grade 9 ) and Wilson (Shubhashish Bhutiani, grade 9), make discoveries about reality and fantasy throughout the play.

More than 60 students auditioned for 12 roles in the last week of August and rehearsed nearly every afternoon until opening night in November. There were more than 50 students who worked together on this production as it required the assistance of the Stage Crew, AudioVisual Crew, two assistant directors, and various designers and crews for props, costumes, makeup and hair.

The cast grew as performing artists and made many discoveries about the craft of drama. The students were encouraged by their attentive and responsive audience. As an ensemble, the cast's creative efforts allowed them to fulfill their mission - to bring to the Woodstock community a vibrant theatrical experience.
