Concert Weekend
As the end of the Fall semester approached in mid-November, Woodstock's student musicians played concerts in Parker Hall. The majority of the students performed in ensembles and a select group were chosen to play solos for the Advanced Student Recital. Many students at Woodstock are musicians with approximately 50% of the student body taking private music lessons. The youngest students taking private instruction are in the 3rd grade.
Strings
Mr. Ravi Arthur's 14 students in Intermediate Orchestra spread holiday cheer with their Christmas Suite. This group is comprised of mostly Middle School students. Mr. Reid Blickenstaff, Head of the Music Department, conducted the Junior Orchestra and the Advanced Orchestra. The Junior Orchestra features violinists and violists from Elementary and Middle School. The Advanced Orchestra, comprised mostly of High School students, played Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 9 by George Frederick Handel which featured three student soloists.
Choirs
Miss Anne Sheehy conducted the Elementary Choir, the Intermediate Choir, and the Advanced Choir. Miss Sheehy was assisted by Mr. Cole Blume, a student teacher who visited for the Fall Semester from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, USA.
Bands
With Mr. Blume's assistance, Mrs. Rachelle Hugg conducted The Beginning Band and the Intermediate Band. These 34 students played a number of selections including Eye of the Tiger. Mr. David Hugg's Advanced Band played the Second Suite in F for Military Band, Op. 28 by Gustav Holst and closed Concert Weekend with selections from The Lion King.
In addition to performing in ensembles, some students were also able to display their musical talent in the Advanced Student Recital. This recital featured 14 soloists including two Indian music students on sitar and voice . Both soloists were accompanied by their teacher, Mr. Aloke Maiti, on tabla. The recital closed with Haydn's Piano Concerto in C Major with Ennuri Jo, 8th grade, as the soloist , whose performance got the audience on their feet cheering.
