The theme of the Middle School RE retreat held over the weekend of 10th/11th September, was Jesus: rebel with a cause". Around 80 students from grades seven and eight braved the monsoon rains to walk the three miles or so to Deodars, Happy Valley, on the Saturday morning, arriving generally wetter than when they set out. A plate of rice, dal and subzi soon warmed them up and they were ready for the afternoon sessions. Through movie clips, presentations and activities the students were encouraged to think about Jesus as someone who defied the conventions of his time when those conventions were contrary to the principle of love. On Saturday evening we saw presentations of the theme in songs, skits and even a three-minute opera. All agreed it was a good weekend, and a great break.
