Indian Culture Week programme

Colorful, fun, event-filled celebrations of "Indian Culture Week" will begin on Monday, August 14 and continue through Friday, August 18. India's 49th year of Independence is marked on Tuesday, August 15, 2006.

At 9:00 a.m., on August 15, the student body, teachers, and all staff members will assemble for the Flag Raising Ceremony. Mrs. Sanjaya Mark, Head of the Elementary School, will introduce the two 12th graders who have been at Woodstock the longest, Sruti Arthur and Siona Gholap, both of whom entered Woodstock's Early Childhood Programme at age 3.

At 11:00 a.m., the exhibition, Re-presenting Indian Women 1875-1947: A Visual Documentary, will be opened at the Hanifl Center. Over 250 visuals based on archival photographs will be on display in five sections: Visualising the Family, The Learning Experience, Worlds Beyond, The National Movement, and Towards Midnight Hour. In addition, there are four panels on specific women: Pandita Ramabai (social reformer), Debaleena Mazumdar and Annapurna Dutta (photographers), Dwarkabai Kamlakar (pioneering doctor), and Sarah Massey (teacher). The exhibition, produced by the Centre for Women's Development Studies, was first held in Delhi in 2001, and has since toured widely in India. The exhibition will remain open on Wednesday 16th August.

At 3:00 p.m., on August 15, in Parker Hall, the play, Winds of Change, developed by Woodstock alumnus Tom Alter and the 5th and 6th graders of The Riverside School, Ahmedabad will be presented. This passionate historical play recounts events from 1857 through 1947.

Winds of Change, presented in the ethos of today's India by today's Indian students in English, Hindi, and Gujarati, includes a wealth of characters and events: Gandhi, Patel, Nehru, Bhagat Singh's heroism and martyrdom, Jinnah, Tagore, Jalianwala Bagh, the Non-Cooperation Movement, Bardoli and the first "Satyagrah," the Dandi March, communal sadness, The Quit India Movement, and-freedom!

At 7:00 p.m., on August 15, Winds of Change will be performed again in Parker Hall. At lunchtime each day of the week, from 12:30-12:45, different cultural events will be presented by classes.
