Rock Club concerts
Amongst the classical, Indian and jazz music taught at the school, rock doesn't have an official place in the curriculum. Nevertheless, it is alive and well. Really, it was always meant to be a bit anti-establishment so having to practise and perform in your own time and scrounge around for equipment probably adds just that touch of rebellion that it needs to flourish.
The Rock Club after much negotiation declared a "Rock Week" from 20th - 25th November. Each day apart from Wednesday there was a series of small-scale performances from staff and students in the Quad from 4.30 - 5.15. On Wednesday they graciously allowed the jazz band a final performance for one of the Carey Exchange students who had shone during his time here. But only on condition that they played a couple of rock tunes!
All of this provided the build-up to the Saturday evening rock concert. Unlike what you might imagine, this was a very well-organised and musically controlled evening, with minimal amplification and a good quality of sound and performance. Many students had a chance to perform the songs they had been working on as soloists or in duos and small groups. Mr. Montgomery featured as a backup artist in a few of the songs, and Mr. Dunn and Mr. Wildman stepped well out of their school roles with a hillbilly rendition of a Queen song whose title it would be embarrassing to mention!
Much kudos to the students who performed and to the organisers, Avash Joshi and Gonpo Lama.
