Tri-Color House Sports Day Elicits Strong Competitive Spirits
How can you tell an Eagle from a Merlin from a Condor? In nature, they are birds colored dark brown, red, or white. At Woodstock, you have to look at the color of a person's tee-shirt: Eagles are blue, Merlins are red, and Condors are green. Or, if a student is wearing face paint, gaudy hair color, or any other weird decoration in one of these colors, you'll know which "house" the person belongs to. Each Woodstock student and staff member is assigned a house identity that cuts across grade levels, residences, and departments.
Loyalty to one's house is so strong that Dana and Judy Crider's son, Jonathan, now a university senior, said recently that it took him several years after leaving Woodstock to be able to wear any other color tee-shirt but Eagle blue. Such ardent loyalties were apparent during Sports Day, as each house screamed chants and sang pep songs to support team members during the competitions. Full marks must be awarded unofficially to ESL teacher Karen Tamminen, who wore her red Merlins shirt and wide-brimmed white hat, as the most enthusiastic adult cheerleader!
Intra-House Sports Day, held all day Friday, October 13, pitted the three house groups against each other in these events with the following winners:
