School closes as part of a nationwide protest against the Orissa violence

Woodstock School is closed today (Friday 29th August) in solidarity with Christian schools throughout India in sorrowful recognition of the events in Orissa, where Christian schools and orphanages have been attacked and destroyed in communal violence. Speaking to an all school assembly, Principal Dr. David Laurenson reminded the students that children and staff from many religions and cultures lived in harmany at the school; they should remember this when they have an opportunity as leaders of the future to do something about situations like this. Ben Lall, Finance Director, announced himself as an Indian and a Christian, and read part of a statement by the All India Christian Council calling for peace in the region. Chaplain Rev. Tim Eby-MacKenzie emphasised our universal brotherhood, and led a minute of silent prayer and reflection. Flowers were laid at the foot of the school flagpole in memory of those who have died.
