The Oscars 2008 -
a grand affair

Junior-Senior Banquet

15th November, 2008, 2:00 p.m. and the Midlands girls were busy indulging in a vanity fair, in preparation for JSB (Junior-Senior Banquet). While some were scurrying around the dorm, their faces covered with green and orange face packs, there were others who sat lazing around. Many had also gone to the bazaar to pick up presents for their dates, with the hope of making a 'quick' stop at the parlor.

This year, the seniors class called 'Tenacious' chose 'The Oscars' as their theme and so the sophomores who traditionally set up and serve JSB were doing the rounds making sure that everything was just perfect for the occasion

JSB meant different things to different people. For some it was all about looking good and walking the 'red carpet'. "I enjoy the whole process of dressing up and getting ready" said Trung Ton, a senior. There were also those who looked forward to having fun and freaking out "Gifts and fun!" said Eri Takeuchi when asked what JSB meant to her. "I'm in it for the dancing." said Menda Tenzing.

By 6:30, the Midlands Basketball court was full of people. First, there were the ninth graders sitting in the window sills waiting to watch the decked out girls walk by and then, of course, were the boys ready to pick up their dates. Everyone loved the attention.

On reaching the school gate all the attendees were met with a swarm of 'paparazzi.' There were flashes everywhere. We were expected to pose in front of a backdrop that read 'T 09'. It was just like the real Oscars on TV.

This JSB was different from every other. It was grander with the red carpet, the mocktail bar and good food. There was a buffet and a Tepanyaki grill. The seniors also took particularly great pleasure in ordering around the tenth graders who were serving them.

After Dinner, everyone proceeded to Parker Hall where the dance was supposed to happen. 'Oscars' were given out for the most adorable, the best smile and funniest girl and boy respectively. The results were decided based on nominations and voting that had taken place a few days earlier. Finally, it was time for the king and queen to be crowned. The title of JSB king went to Akshay Aggarwal and JSB Queen was received by Charisma Kundan. The two danced with Mr. Cooke (Head of high school) and Mrs. Cooke to the song 'Stand by me' performed by Samuel John, accompanied by the Jazz Band. After that everyone hit the dance floor and had a gala time. "It was OK, but I thought the music at the dance could have been better" said Kajoli Anand. "Other than the music, it was a fun night overall." said Sara Hanneman a junior.

At about 12:00 am, after the dance had ended, the boys walked their dates back down to Midlands. Some of them actually stayed for a while to shoot a few hoops before leaving for dorms.

It was definitely an enjoyable night and for many, a memory from Woodstock that will always be treasured.
