Wilderness First Aid Training

Three members from the National Outdoors Leadership School (NOLS) visited the Hanifl Centre from August 31st - September 2nd to train Woodstock staff on Wilderness First-Aid as well as Adult and Child CPR Airway Management. Several members of faculty, including staff from the school's residences as well as those from the Health Centre certified themselves with these skills after the three-day workshop.

For several of the lessons imparted by the NOLS experts, the staff members took part in realistic scenarios to learn how to manage and deal with emergency situations, particularly in the wilderness. Woodstock staff learnt about the patient assessment system, spine and head injury management, shock, and wilderness wound management.

The staff were handed special first-aid booklets and handouts as part of their training, and were told about wilderness First Aid kits. Several more topics were covered, a few of which included dealing with athletic injuries, fractures, dislocations, cold injuries, and altitude illnesses.

A special CPR Airway Management course was also conducted at the residence level as well as the Hanifl Centre for the staff.

Most Woodstock students and staff impart in several educational outdoor activities, and trained staff members will now be able to share and apply their experience and advice when required.
