Senior Recital
After the hectic activity of Going Down Day, the school is left clear for the graduating class, and the first of their special events is the Senior Recital. This is an annual showcase for the musical talents of the class, and this year a varied selection of music was on display, Interestingly, there were no strings on show, but this concert did include two Indian pieces: Aesha Vakil, voice was accompanied by Mr. Aloke Maiti, Indian Music Teacher, in "Raag Hansdhwani" (Vistar Ang), by Pandit A. T. Kanan. And Mr. Aloke played tabla to accompany Kumiko Akiyama on sitar playing "Raaga Yaman" by Pandit Gokul Nag.
Brass was well represented, with two trumpet pieces by Tom Jeffery and Prashant Masih. The former played "Badinage", by Eugène Bozza, and the latter a contemporary piece by Allen Vizzutti called "Funk". Tim Smith played two demanding movements from "Concerto for Trombone", by Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov.
Woodwinds also featured in a number of pieces. First was a flute quartet played by Anjali Mathai, Jung Min Lim, Keren Bhujel, Mansi Gupta, "The Village Maid", by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Hae Won Jung played part of "Sonata", Op.167 by Camille Saint-Saëns, and Dorien Ediger-Seto played the Allegro Moderato from "Sonata in E flat Major" by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Cheon Ha Jeon contributed a more unusual piece by the Argentinian tango composer, Astor Piazzolla, a very meditative tune called "Café 1930".
Norah Weber gave a good performance of the guitar classic "Leyenda", by Isaac Albinéz; Eun Hae Kim played the piano study "Etude in B flat Minor", Op.4, No. 3 by Karol Szymanovski, and members of the Senior Choir sang "For Good", from the musical "Wicked" (Stephen Schwartz). The lyrics were very fitting for this time in the lives of the Seniors:
