Elementary Sports Day - Everyone a Winner
With stomachs in their mouths and nerves jangling the children of the Elementary School made their way down to Hanson Field on Saturday morning, 18th March. Sports Day is one of the most popular dates in the calendar and no one minded getting out of bed early to attend. The races began in earnest at 8.30 with the youngest going first. Clearly the ECP and KG were in no mood to find the finish line, with the exception of a speedy Robbie Hugg. Video cameras were closely trained on each child and ECP made their way round the challenging obstacle course.
There was no let up in the events and as soon as children had found their seat, after competing, they were off again. From 50 meter dashes to lemon and spoon races, everyone gave of their best and by the end of the day every child had picked up at least one medal for their efforts. Tseki Lhamo typified the day when she won a gold medal for kindness - pulling out of her own race to assist a friend who had fallen.
The races were concluded by a pre-ECP sprint and it resembled Monty Python's race for the directionally challenged. For Emma Cooke and Toby Reid the day had taken its toll and they were only too glad to be back safely in the arms of their parents. The time had come for the final scores to be announced and everyone applauded the efforts of the Merlin team. However, Sport at an Elementary level is all about taking part and no one doubted that everyone was a winner. As the sun continued to shine down, the weary athletes and supporters made their way to share a lunch together in the Alteridge Dining room. Well done to everyone.
