Mussoorie Writers' Festival
Five days. Twenty-eight writers. Ten panel discussions. Twelve prose and poetry readings. One film premier. Six nights of parties, recitations, singing and music. Classroom visits. Autographs. And continuous literary conversation.
The first Mussoorie International Writers' Festival ended on Saturday, April 29, 2007. Woodstock's Hanifl Centre was the main venue, but events took place across Mussoorie. One evening, a public reading was held at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Happy Valley. The next morning storytellers were entertaining students at Kaplani village school along the Tehri Road. From the Burgoyne Campground above the Hanifl Centre to the Vera Marley Library, Woodstock's campus provided memorable places where students, faculty and writers could meet together in a celebration of language, images and ideas. The most dramatic setting for any of the events was the Lyre Tree. To watch the sun going down behind its curved branches, as the audience listened to three poets share their work, was to feel the sinuous power of words in nature.
