9th Win Mumby basketball tournament
Woodstock School was pleased to host nine girls' and nine boys' basketball teams for the ninth annual Win Mumby All India Basketball Tournament this April. Over the course of three days the teams battled for the coveted Win Mumby trophy, going through elimination rounds until the final games on Saturday afternoon.
Woodstock girls, coached by parent Lorraine Roche and Woodstock teacher Christina Guenther, fought hard, coming from behind in their first game to win by two points. In the quarter finals they attempted to repeat their performance, losing to the other team by two. Woodstock boys, coached by Woodstock teacher Ajay Mark, made it to the semi-finals after winning their first two games. They gave the other team a run for their money, losing only by five.
The final girls' game between Welham Girls' School and Montfort School was exciting as two top notch teams fought hard for that final win. Montfort bested Welham in the end, gaining the trophy for their school. Montfort was also represented in the final boys' game against Doon School but they could not pull off the win for a Montfort sweep. Doon won by pulling ahead in the last quarter, claiming the victory and trophy.
Win Mumby was a Woodstock alumnus and teacher with a life long commitment to sports and physical education. He passed away in 1998 and Woodstock saw fit to honor him by establishing the Win Mumby All India Basketball Tournament.
Mr. Ajay Mark, Woodstock PE teacher and the organizer of the Win Mumby Tournament is to be congratulated for his tremendous work in bringing together these excellent teams for an exciting and well-received basketball tournament. All of the participants, players and spectators alike, had high praise for this wonderful event.
