Elementary School sports day
We always prefer to feature writing by the students themselves, so here's some reflections on the recent sports day from those who took part.
High jump by Apurva Adit
"Come on Apurva you can do it" the grade 5 boys cheered as I headed for the crash mat. This was my last chance- if only I could do it. 'If only I can do it" I thought to myself. With all the cheering ringing in my ears, I shot off. As the pole grew nearer my knees began to tremble. And all of the sudden I was right next to the pole. Without thinking I lifted my right leg as I high as I could, almost as high as the height of Shaurya. While I was crossing the pole I kept all my body parts close to my body. But my legs were as straghit as the pole facing forward. Bouncing like a ball I landed on the crash mat. My attention wasn't on me but the shaking pole. 'Tktktktk' the pole bounced on the nails and 'THWAK!' it hit the crash mat. I got off the crash mat knowing high jump was over for me.
High jump by Rashika Dhar
As soon as Mr. Mark called the grade 5 girls for my heart popped into my throat; I was nervous. Trembling on my seat, I crossed my fingers, stood up and went down. While walking to the mat I turned back. People were staring at me as if I was taking part in the Olympics. So, I just jogged to the mat and our practice began. We did some practice and got into our right orders. Mr.Joab showed up with the papers and then the real competition began. My nervousness began to fade away and eventually it did, since I realized that it wasn't that bad. Soon, it was getting near the end because only Samiha and I were left.
"You can do this Samiha!" I screamed "You can win it!". "No I can't! You're tall and you can win it!" she replied. "Don't worry! Just run!!!" I yelled.
She huffed and puffed to the place but suddenly she made the pole fall. Luckily she had 2 chances left, but sadly she didn't make it. I carried on till the last one I could do and seriously my backside was sore because twice I landed on the pole.
"You're so good!" each one of my friends said as I was coming back. I just made an embarrassed face at them but inside it felt really good. Really I wanted to thank Mrs. Rollins because it was her encouragement which helped me a lot.
The 40-inch high jump by Yugaan
"Yugaan, it's your turn now," I said to myself, excited. Heading to the jumping point I jumped, and knocked the bar down! I felt so sad. But my friends who were supporting me said that I still have two more chances and I can make it. That made me feel better.
"Ouchy on the bottom," Mrs. Hugg said. "You need to jump with more speed." My second turn was coming after Aman and I felt so nervous. Starting towards the jumping point, I knocked the bar down again!! That made me feel way worse than my first try.
"It's O.k. Yugaan" my friends said. "You still have one more chance and I know you can do it!" I was the only on that had one turn left. Going on my third and final try, I jumped and knocked the bar down AGAIN!!! This time I was out of the game. I was sad but happy because I reached the game this far.
The long jump by Samiha
Making my way to the long jump area I started practicing my jumping skills. Getting in line I was the fifth person. Mrs. Kumar was right beside all the girls when we started running. My turn came and Mrs. Kumar said, "Samiha, First take small steps and then start sprinting." Mr. Peters waved his hands and that was the signal to start. I was slowly jogging in the beginning and when I saw the white line I knew I had to sprint to make a long jump. I was so motivated I jumped farther every time. Then my last jump came and after my jump I heard Mr. Thomas saying longest jump and I knew I was at first place.
