Grade 10 adopt Tehri Road

Students of Grade 10 (The Class of 2012) began a community service initiative a few weeks ago to voluntarily take responsibility for the cleanliness and maintenance of the Tehri road from the school gate to the top of Mullingar Hill. The students placed two stainless steel dustbins on Saturday, April 10th, with the help of a few employees near the Tehri Bus stand and tea shops. The bins have been paid for and placed by the Grade 10 class officers and students, with the agreement and support of the local politician, Mr. Bhandari.

Grade 10 Class Governors Priyankar Chand and Sukhan Kaur further describe this initiative:

The class of 2012 (Grade 10) has started a class project this semester, which we currently refer to as "The adopt a highway initiative". This idea was initially brought to our attention by Mr. Daniel Swanson (one of our beloved advisors). This project deals with the ecological and social relationship of Woodstock and its surroundings. Currently, we are focusing on the Tehri road that runs along from the main gate to the end of Mullingar hill.

This semester we have planned on setting up nine dustbins along that road in order to decrease the amount of waste being dumped down the hill. For this project we approached Mr. Crider and his CLEAN initiative. The class of 2012 will arrange the payment for 4.5 dustbins, and CLEAN will contribute to the other half. The dustbins are similar to the new metal dustbins set up beside the dorm store. Each dustbin will cost a maximum of 9,000 rupees. The total cost of our project this semester is approximately 80,000 rupees, inclusive of dustbins and road signs.

Due to the generous support from CLEAN, Mr. Swanson, Mr. Geddes and the Woodstock community we have been able to raise much of the needed amount. Yesterday, during the parent teacher meeting alone we collected 17,600 rupees from donations. This donation will suffice for the purchase of two metal dustbins.

The first two dustbins will be installed this Saturday near the shops below the Landour Community Hospital (LCH), where there is an increasing garbage disposal problem. In order for this project to be sustainable we have already discussed installing the dustbins with the local community and the local city board head Mr. Rakesh Bhandari. He has given us the green signal to set up the dustbins along the road and he supports the purpose of our project, as it benefits the environment and the society of Mussoorie.
