"Portraits" art show

Faces peering at me, looking me straight in the eye, frozen expressions, eyes unblinking, skin that's aged with sun and skin still young, paint applied thickly, watercolour washes, pencil lines and photographs hanging. April 20th was the opening of the Portraits art show at the Hanifl Centre. The Woodstock community gathered to enjoy looking at a collection of staff and student artwork all on the central theme of portraits.

Last semester's art exhibit at the Hanifl Centre on the theme of "monsoon" was a success and encouraged more participation in this current exhibit. The idea to do the theme on "Portraits" came from the art classes as many students were studying this concept. Some of them fashioned their portraits after artists such as Chuck Close, Vincent Van Gogh and Frida Kalho. Other students chose different approaches, some being abstract with little resemblance to the subject - vibrant colours, thick lines and shapes - and yet other pieces are very realistic. Photographs of faces also adorn the walls of the centre.

The opening was a success; chai and donuts were served after a few remarks were made. Students and staff also had the opportunity to vote on pieces in the exhibit. Grade 12 student Chuki Norbu was voted to have the most creative piece, most skilled and attention to detail went to Ein Jung from grade 8 and the self portrait that most resembled the artist was a three-way tie between grade 11 student Ysolt Brar, Temjenmoa Jamir from grade 12 and Thomas Swanson from grade 12.

The show will remain up until the end of May. If you'd like to view the show, the Hanifl Centre is open from 9-5 Monday to Friday, but you are requested to call ahead before going, at 135-661-5175.
