Reaching new heights
One of the most popular additions to the Win Mumby Gymnasium has been the climbing room. Woodstock hired climbing specialist Suman Mitra last semester to teach enthusiastic students the art of mastering a climb.
Students of all ages, down to even the ECP/KG kids, have had a chance to spend some time in the climbing room, where they learned about how to wear a harness, how to make knots, and how to belay someone who is climbing the wall.
There are two types of climbs that the students have received instruction in. The first is the 'Top Rope Belay Climb', and for more advanced climbers, the 'Lead Climb'. Several of the students have started to make their own routes up the wall using colour-coded holds on the wall.
Mitra has also initiated a Climbing Club, consisting of interested students looking for more climbing challenges. The next step is to take the lessons they learn in this controlled indoor environment out to the rocks and hills surrounding Woodstock.
